Week 1: Mon 24 Jul & Thur 27 Jul

Internship Log Book

I secured an internship with The Social CliQ, a digital agency that primarily focuses on managing social media accounts and ads for a variety of clients. I will complete my hours over the course of 12 weeks where I am to attend in person at their studio in Cremorne, Melbourne every Monday and Thursday.

My goals are to learn more about what it’s like to work in a medium sized company / design studio, and be able to practise skills in filming and editing video content, even if it’s just short form style.

The first week was a complete information overload but very interesting. I started at the same time as two other interns who were also hired to help the creative team. The first morning was spent in meetings where we met (almost) everyone who worked there and learned about what they do and how they fit into the business. I also got to witness their weekly business meeting where each member talks through their wins from the previous week, and what their focus is for the coming week. There was a lot of marketing and social media jargon that I did not understand but was excited to learn about.

During an onboarding session, I learned the various processes and systems that the team use to communicate and complete their work. This included Slack for team comms, Monday for task management, and Google Suite for email, calendar and file management.

My supervisor, senior graphic designer Rubi, talked me through all the clients that she manages creative content for, and the types of graphics and video work that each client prefers. She took me through a client that I will be starting with, Macy and Tailor, which is a pretzel chip brand. The Social CliQ creates organic content for their Instagram account and occasional Facebook advertisement funnels.

The rest of my time during the first week was spent creating graphics and an animation for Macy’s September content plan. For this client, I had to work with very little existing graphics as they have only ever had one product photoshoot, which has been in use since last year. This creates a challenge for the team to come up with unique ideas for each month’s content plan. Each month is separated into four weeks, and each week usually contains one reel, four regular posts and two stories.

Due to the lack of client assets, the creative style for Macy’s Instagram account is simple but playful and requires stock graphics most of the time. This was the first graphic I created for Macy:

I worked on the below animation on my second day, which I received guidance from Rubi for. She showed me her workflow in After Effects and the techniques she uses to get something like this made quickly.
