I worked with the RMIT NEXT team to produce two compilation videos using footage from existing interviews as part of a short series to promote the RMIT NEXT mission.
This project was my first experience working with a team to produce video content. When I was onboarded, I was given clear objectives for the overall goals of these long-form videos and how they needed to fit into existing content on the RMIT NEXT website. For each video we discussed the intended message and possible narrative solutions. For the most part I was given the freedom to plan and produce the compilation in a way that I deemed best to reach the narrative and tonal goals.
We worked on one video at a time, making sure the first video was complete before moving on. I enjoyed working this way as it enabled me to reflect and adjust the ways I approached each part of the process, and I was able to work more efficiently the second time around.
I watched every interview the team provided while recording notes alongside timestamps for the parts that seemed appropriate for the current video. I placed high importance on this part of the process, as it gave me the information I needed to build the narrative of the video. I gave full attention to detail to ensure I was obtaining snippets of footage that would help to promote the intended message.
After I produced a rough draft of the edit, the team and I discussed what changes needed to be made to the order of clips, whether some clips could be shortened and still retain their importance, and what could be added to fill gaps in the narrative. I continued to refine the edit, as well as add graphics and other assets where necessary to ensure the video met the tonal and visual style already established in existing content made by the team.
I was challenged by the source material limitations to produce polished video and audio. Each interview was recorded online through a video call platform, which meant there were differences in speakers’ volume, audio and video glitches due to bad internet connections, and low resolution video. I overcame these challenges by aligning volume levels across all clips, and used editing techniques to hide glitches to ensure the issues did not distract the viewer.
Overall this experience was very positive. I loved working collaboratively and am thankful I had the opportunity to learn from passionate professionals to expand my skills in narrative-led video production.
